Background
Public libraries have been present in America’s history for centuries, predating the country’s independence from Great Britain (Sturgis Library, 2018). Large majorities of Americans continue to view libraries as part of the educational ecosystem and as resources to develop digital literacy for all demographics (Pew Research Center, 2016). Services range from reserving and checking out books to providing culturally-specific community events and access to the latest technology. While there’s so much to offer, teens aren’t utilizing the services of the libraries as much as they could be. Hitting closer to home, the Chicago Public Library has an opportunity to further strengthen ties with tween and teen audiences.
Combining a passion for unfettered access to education and public services, my three teammates and I created a mock iOS app for the Chicago Public Library to increase teenage patrons. We wanted to provide a hassle-free service that can engage and remind busy teens of events and due dates when they’re outside the library.
